Segura-Calderon make weight

The weights are in for Saturday's junior flyweight unification between WBO champion Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico and WBA champion Giovanni Segura of Mexico. Calderon came in at 107.8-pounds and Segura came in a tiny bit above his opponent at 107.9. The fight, promoted by PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) takes place at the Coliseo Mario “Quijote” Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Both fighters were in great shape.

Maidana-Corley final presser!

The fight between WBA Interim super lightweight champion Marcos Maidana and Demarcus “Chop Chop” Corley that will take place next Saturday at the Luna Park stadium in Argentina was presented at a press conference held on Wednesday. Joined by his two trainers, Miguel Díaz and Cristian Rodríguez, Maidana said “I know I can punch, but I’m always prepared for 12 rounds. Corley said it will be a war, so I’m ready for a war.”

“I had a great camp and I think I got better some aspects of my boxing. I hope to show it on Saturday,” Maidana added in front a large assistance from the press.

Also present was Maidana’s co-promoter Golden Boy Promotion’s representative Eric Gómez, who confirmed that if Maidana wins on Saturday a fight against Amir Khan is likely to happen in December. Maidana’s other promoter, Universum Box Promotions’s Dietmar Poszwa, is scheduled to arrive on Friday.

However, Corley said “I have a game plan to defeat Maidana, but I won’t reveal it. But, trust me, I’m here to win ‘cause I’m smarter.”

“Maidana is among the top five super lightweights, but I’’m there, too. It will be a war because he has something (he pointed out at the WBA belt) that I want,” Corley added.

Expectations to see Maidana fighting are such among boxing fans in Argentina that tickets are already sold out, something happening for the first time in many years here.

Sturm sharp in sparring!

WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm sparred ten rounds against three different sparring partners in his gym in Cologne, Germany,. The 31-years old Sturm is in his final week of sparring for his September 4 clash against hard-hitting challenger Giovanni Lorenzo in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. Sturm looked sharp and quick in today’s session. “I’m in great shape”, he said. “My camp went great and I’m ready to defend my title next week. My fans are in for a real treat.” Sturm’s first bout in 14 months is only 11 days away.

Roach in Donetsk

Legendary trainer Freddie Roach has arrived in Donetsk, Ukraine to prepare WBA welterweight champion Viacheslav Senchenko (30-0, 20 KOs) for his August 30 defense against Charlie Jose Navarro (18-3, 13 KOs) in the big boxing show at Lenin Square, Donetsk.

Senchenko-Navarro meet face to face

WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko, and Venezuelan challenger Charlie Navarro, were face to face at the official press conference for their fight that is going to be held next Monday in Donestk, Ukraine.

This commitment represents the second defense of the Ukrainian's black and gold belt. The champion has an unbeaten pro record in 30 ring starts, and 20 of them by knockout.

For his part, Navarro went well prepared and ready to address this major global chance accompanied by coaches Rigoberto Garibaldi, Francisco Arroyo and Dr. Ronyel Rudas. He has a record of 18 wins and three losses with 14 knockouts.

Both fighters asserted to the media who were present at the conference, making it clear that they were ready to fight.

"There is not much difference in height, we're pretty even and it is important that we get ready," summarized Navarro.

The authorities in the global fight will be Canadian Guy Jutras who will be the supervisor, referee Steve Smoger undertaking the role as the third man, while the judges who will be responsible for assessing the scores are going to be American Levi Martinez, John Coyle of England, and Juan Manuel Garcia of Spain.

Segura-Calderon final presser!

This Saturday, August 28 at the Coliseum Mario "Quijote" Morales in Guaynabo, history will be made in the ring when light flyweights champions, World Boxing Organization (WBO) holder Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon, and World Boxing Association (WBA) king Giovanni Segura, take part in a unification bout being held for the first time on Puerto Rico. The fight will headline a card called "Unification" - being put together by PR Best Boxing Promotions. Calderon (34-0-1 and six knockouts) will have the opportunity he has waited his whole career - to become a champion of two sanctioning bodies, and at the same time it will be in his town, against a young, hard-hitting Mexican in Segura who sports a record of 24-1 and 20 knockouts. "This is a fight we were looking for a long time for Calderon, since he was at 105 pounds, but for various reasons it could not happen. Now, Calderon will have this opportunity and make history before people against Segura. We know that Puerto Ricans in general will support Calderon in this historic feat," said promoter Ivan Rivera, president of PR Best Boxing Promotions. "We want to thank the Municipal Administration and Guaynabo Mayor Hector O'Neill for all the help they have given us for this event, which will be a historical one."

"We finally gave the fight that everyone was asking for, a unification. I mean that I am well prepared and we will make our fight and box as I always do, to win the second belt at this weight and unify my title for the first time," said Calderon, who has seven years on champion, and is trained by Jose "Cheche" Sanchez and Felix Pagan Pintor. For his part, Segura is a gladiator at 28 years old and became champion in 2009 by knocking out Colombia's Cesar Canchila and has successfully defended his belt on three occasions. "I came to win that belt to become a double champion. I know I have the punch and the desire to defeat Calderon. I'm going to press the action to beat him by knockout. I'll be very calm and ready for when the bell rings," said Segura, whose coach is Javier Capetillo, who is suspended for illegal bandagesin connection with Antonio Margarito and may not be in his corner.

Gamboa ready to shine in Las Vegas!

On September 11th Cuban featherweight phenomenon Yuriorkis Gamboa will enter the ring for his first championship unification bout when the WBA titlist faces IBF champ Orlando Salido at The Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas.
“This will be Gamboa’s toughest test so far”, says promoter Ahmet Öner. “We have matched him against strong opposition from his very first pro-fight on but a title unification is always special. Salido isn’t wearing the championship belt for nothing. Also the pressure on Gamboa is increasing now that he is the main event fighter in Vegas and on HBO. But I am convinced that he will prove once more that he is one of the best fighters and most exciting rising stars in the sport today."

Segura in Puerto Rico

WBA Light Flyweight champion Giovanni Segura arrived in Puerto Rico to complete his training for Saturday’s bout against WBO 108lb champion Iván “Iron Boy” Calderón on the card billed as “Unification” at the Mario “Quijote” Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo in a presentation of PR Best Boxing Promotions which will be televised on Pay Per View. Segura (24-1, 20KOs) arrived join with Richard Mota, Arturo Mota and trainer Javier Capetillo. Tomorrow Segura will train at the Jose “Cheo” Aponte Gym in Caguas, where he’ll join Juanma López, who met him in Los Angeles and invited him to train in his gym.

Gilberto Jesus announced WBA XXII "KO to Drugs Festival" in Panama

WBA Interim Flyweight Champion Luis “Nica” Concepcion will be making the third defense of his title when he takes on WBA # 3 and former world champion Denkaosen Kaovichit from Thailand next October 2, at Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City, Panama, during the WBA XXII KO to Drugs Festival. The official announcement was recently made by WBA Executive Vice President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza and promoter Rogelio Espiño, CEO of  Promociones y Eventos del Istmo.

The co- main event will featured WBA Cruiserweight world champion Guillermo “Felino” Jones defending his  title against mandatory contender and former world champion Valery Brudov.

Also Shantall Martinez and Ogelidis Suarez will fight for the WBA Fedefem title in a highly anticipated rematch.

WBA Convention in Nicaragua

The WBA Annual Convention will be a tribute to the memory of former world champion Alexis Arguello at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Managua, Nicaragua on November 22-27. WBA executive vice president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza announced that 89th edition of the meeting will feature a series of themes linked with the sport. This year a negotiation workshop Dr. Habib Chaman and seminars on boxing marketing and leadership will take place. “These are central themes for the improvement all participants in boxing,” commented Mendoza. WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and heavyweight legend George Foreman are expected to attend. The General Assembly will be held on November 23-24, with the two following days dedicated to the improvement seminars. “The creation of the World Boxing Association was in the year 1921 in Rhode Island, New York. We have affiliation of more than 60 countries where boxing is practiced in different parts of the world. For this reason we consider ourselves pioneers in the sport. This year we expect the participation of some 200 delegates from all parts of the world,” said Mendoza Jr.

AMB Rendirá Homenaje Póstumo a Alexis Arguello en la Convención Anual

La Convención Anual de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, que este año tendrá como tema central el Homenaje al fallecido campeón Alexis Arguello, tomará el hotel Crowne Plaza de Managua como sede, desde el 22 al 27 de Noviembre del presente año 2010.

Según anunció el vicepresidente de la AMB, Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, en la octogésima novena edición de la reunión se revisarán una serie de temas vinculados con el deporte, tal como todos los años, y además se realizará un Taller de Negociación para el boxeo, que será dictado por el Dr. Habib Chaman, se desarrollará el tema de marketing del boxeo con un equipo de profesionales del área, y una charla sobre liderazgo.

“Eso serían los temas centrales para el mejoramiento de todos los vinculados con el boxeo, tanto directivos, entrenadores, todos los que asistan con la intención de prepararse”, comentó Mendoza.

Igualmente aseveró que entre los invitados especiales para esa Convención se espera contar con el Campeón Mundial pesado de la AMB, el británico David Haye, y  el dos veces monarca universal, el estadounidense George Foreman.

La Asamblea General se tiene pensado realizarse los días 23 y 24 de Noviembre, mientras  que los dos días siguientes serían dedicados a los seminarios de mejoramiento.

“La creación de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo fue en el año 1921 en Rhode Island, Nueva York. Tenemos afiliación de más de 60 países donde se practica el pugilismo en distintas partes del mundo. Presentada en Panamá cartelera del KO a las Drogas

La vigésima segunda edición del Festival boxístico KO a las Drogas, fue presentado en Panamá la tarde del jueves, y se anunció oficialmente parte de la cartelera que se desarrollará en la Arena Roberto Durán, el próximo 2 de Octubre.

Según detalló Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, vicepresidente de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, ente creador del mencionado evento, la pelea estelar será protagonizada por Luis “El Nica” Concepción quien defenderá su cetro interino mosca de la AMB, frente al tailandés Denkaosan Kaovichit.

La pega co estelar de la maratónica cartelera será la del rey panameño del peso crucero Guillermo Jones frente al retador número 1 del ranking, el ruso Valery Brudov.

Además estará la segunda batalla entre la venezolana Ogleidis “La Niña” Suárez y la panameña Shantal Martínez, por cinturón FEDEFEN de las 122 libras. “Esta será una pelea de revancha, porque Martínez fue la que le quitó el invicto a la venezolana, y es un combate que ellas han pedido desde hace tiempo”, confesó Mendoza.

Suárez tiene su historial con 12 triunfos 1 derrota precisamente ante Martínez, quien acumula 10-1.

Irving Berry y Feider Viloria serán los protagonistas de la batalla del peso pluma, de la noche.

También se supo que se espera por los rivales del japonés Koki Kameda, Luis Pineda y Ameth Díaz. Además, se habló de la posibilidad de incluir a los venezolanos Jaider Parra y Johan Pérez dentro del programa.

“La próxima semana ya tendrá mayor forma estar maratónica cartelera, porque todavía estamos definiendo combates, y la inclusión de boxeadores que debemos confirmar”, sentenció Mendoza.

Con respecto al resto de la programación del Festival. Mendoza sólo adelantó que el invitado especial será Ricardo “Finito” López, quien dictará una charla motivacional durante los días previos al evento central.

Para Gilberto Mendoza la labor social es primordial

El presidente de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, el venezolano Gilberto Mendoza, estuvo en Panamá, y asistió el sábado La Revancha, cartel que se desarrolló en la Arena Roberto Durán y tuvo de pelea estelar la segunda batalla entre Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno y Nehomar Cermeño.

Mendoza dijo que se encontraba en el país del Istmo no sólo por la cartelera, sino también por una labor social que ha desarrollado durante muchos años, como integrante de la Sociedad de Scout.

“Fui presidente de la Asociación de Scout de Venezuela, durante unos cuantos años, y ahora me postularon para un cargo internacional. Ahora estoy formando parte del comité interamericano de scoutismo, que está reunido en Panamá en la Conferencia de Scout que se hace cada tres años”.

La idea es revisar lo que se hace en el mundo entero con los scout, “tenemos un comité ejecutivo que se reúne cada tres o cuatro meses para llevar la parte del día a día de esa actividad, que es una actividad muy bonita porque estás formando muchachos, buenos ciudadanos”.

Explicó que en la idea de los scout es “trabajar con planes muy formales, y tenemos equipos para ello. Por ejemplo la Asociación de Scout de Panamá, como la de Venezuela, se mueve con un presidente ejecutivo, y un grupo de trabajo que conforma para desarrollar a los muchachos en todas las áreas”.

Tomando como punto de referencia siempre el boxeo, Mendoza asevera que trabajar en conjunto es lo ideal, pero no siempre puede hacerse.

Golovkin wins WBA interim title

28-year old 2003 World Amateur Middleweight champion and 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Gennady Golovkin (19-0, 16 KO), 159, of Kazakhstan took a big step forward in his professional career and needed only a round to do it.  Colombia’s 22-year old Milton Nunez (21-2-1, 19 KO), 159, was simply outclassed and run over. 

While the opponent was less than notable, the win gives Golovkin a WBA Middleweight belt and sets him up for bigger things.  Whether that will mean an opportunity to face the WBA’s other notable Middleweight titlist, Felix Sturm, remains to be seen but, based on his background, Golovkin must be considered a live, developing threat to the legitimate Middleweight Champion of the World Sergio Martinez.

Anselmo Moreno Repeats, Decisions Cermeño Close

Maybe the most underrated fighter in the sport showed off why again on Saturday night at the Roberto Duran Arena in Panama City, Panama.   25-year old WBA Bantamweight titlist Anselmo Moreno (30-1-1, 10 KO) of San Miguelito, Panama, notched his seventh title defense with a split decision victory over 30-year old Nehomar Cermeno (19-2, 11 KO), Panamanian born and fighting out of Barcelona, Venezuela.  The fight was the second in a row between the two fighters, a split decision win for Moreno in March leading the WBA to mandate an immediate return. 

Both men came in a quarter pound below the division limit at 117 ¾. Both fighters started with the intensity of a thirteenth round.  For them, it was. Cermeno was firing his orthodox left jab hard, Moreno returning his southpaw right and winging a long right behind it.  A short right hook and left hand from Moreno brought a roar from his countrymen and he added a striking left near the halfway mark. Cermeno chased but found his shots blocked or finding air.  Moreno closed the first with a short uppercut off the ropes.

Moreno remained both accurate and elusive in the second, Cermeno all but diving in with lead looping lefts to try and trap the taller man.  Cermeno landed a hard right in the last minute but Moreno followed with a short hook inside to stem any hope of a shift in control.  The third was closer, Cermeno able to work himself inside where the trading of singular, stiff body shots kept both men on their toes.

Mixing in a share of low blows which drew a warning from referee Hubert Earle, Cermeno blasted Moreno with some measured lefts in the fourth, a bull-matador dynamic clear.  The bull kept the advantage in round five, Cermeno’s pressure flattening the feet of Moreno by the end of the round.

Both men had their moments in the sixth.  Moreno glued his left hand to his face and blocked the right well in the late stages of the round while snaking in quick shots in close.  Cermeno’s right landed near the ropes and he had success with the left at mid-ring. 

Standing his ground for most of the seventh, Moreno boxed beautifully.  He made Cermeno miss repeatedly while rolling and countering with sharp lefts and the occasional lead right.  Cermeno simply worked harder, attempting late to swarm the defenses but struggling to connect.  Moreno was even more dominant in the eighth, Cermeno able to land only a single notable right in the waning seconds after finding the buttery titlist to slick for most of the round and eating a number of clean, slapping counters. Cermeno lost some steam in the ninth as Moreno got on his bicycle a bit, comfortable to work the perimeter of the ring for long stretches.  In a close tenth round, it was Cermeno doing his best work early and Moreno closing strong.  A brief respite to fix loose tape on Moreno’s glove accentuated the shift in the round as he mustered some snappy shots in the closing seconds with the deep breath provided.

His left eye swelling, Cermeno came out with purpose in the eleventh, ignoring the chants of “Chemito!” for Moreno from the crowd.  Moreno ignored a low blow at the end of the first minute, poised as he jabbed and worked in a pair of left uppercuts in the second minute of the round.  Down the stretch, time was presumably becoming every bit as much Cermeno’s enemy as the shoulders of Moreno that kept sending his right hand into the air behind him.

A Cermeno left hook in the opening minute of the final round caught Moreno clean and, emptying his reserves, Cermeno added another left near the ropes.  Moreno was not content to simply sit on what appeared a lead, planting and looping his left uppercut home a couple times.  Cermeno responded with a thudding right, a minute remaining on the night.  He wanted the knockout.  It was not to be and, for a split second, the crowd thought it was Cermeno who was floored but Earle correctly ruled a slip.  The final ten seconds saw Cermeno posing, looking for an opening, and Moreno slipping away one last time.

It would be the same on the final scorecards, Moreno a winner at tallies of 116-112 and 115-113.  Cermeno got the third nod at 115-113.  BoxingScene scored the bout 116-112 for Moreno.  Cermeno, a 2000 Venezuelan Olympian, earned his title shot with a pair of 2009 victories over former unified Jr. Bantamweight titlist Cristian Mijares and goes back to the drawing board.  U.S. fans who appreciate the finer points of the sweet science can hope that Moreno’s road warrior reputation lead a fighter who has posted wins in France, Germany, and Venezuela in recent years to a chance at a fight which could draw U.S. attention. 

There are shades of Pernell Whitaker and fellow Panamanian slickster Hilario Zapata in the game of Moreno.  With the Bantamweight class at a peak of talent, including other outstanding titlists like Fernando Montiel and Yonnhy Perez, Moreno has shown in his title reign to date the elite stuff to demand his place with anyone at 118 lbs.

Gilberto Jesus: “La Revancha es un verdadero clásico boxístico”

En opinión de los entendidos y aficionados en Panamá, la pelea entre Nehomar Cermeño y Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno por el título gallo de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo será a muerte, reñida y muy buena. La mayor parte apuesta a un final rápido antes del límite, mientras que otros precavidos hablan de una decisión amplia para cualquiera de los dos según las inclinaciones.

Sin embargo, el vicepresidente de la AMB, Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, se limita a decir que: “La Revancha, es un verdadero clásico boxístico, una pelea que marcará una rivalidad deportiva a la par de los grandes combates que han hecho historia en el deporte. El calibre de ambos lo dicen sus record profesionales y muestran la atención internacional que debe tener un combate de esta calidad”. No se atreve a dar un pronóstico, por su condición de directivo del organismo mundial, pero comenta: “Es una pelea que generará una reñida y competitiva pelea que  no tiene que envidiar nada a los grandes escenarios boxísticos. Será un combate clásico, técnico y bien cerrado cada asalto Venezuela fue testigo y ahora toca el turno a Panamá, pero nuestro interés es gritarle a quienes nos ignoran que el resto del mundo produce grandes combates que tiene merecen ser vistos por los aficionados”.

Además, Mendoza comenta: “Ojala las grandes cadenas  pudieran poner atención a un combate como este  el boxeo necesita más que  nunca de ese apoyo pero es importante resaltar que aunque a un canal norteamericano por creer que no tiene valor comercial obvian el valor genuino que un combate aporta  en los aficionados no solo del boxeo sino del resto de los deportes.  Podemos aportar al deporte y es nuestra disposición seguiremos haciendo lo posible como organismo para que los buenos combates continúen”.

Todo listo para el pesaje de este viernes en Panamá

Ante la firme promesa del campeón del peso gallo de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (29-1-1), de reivindicarse ante su público, los medios panameños aseguran que saldrá victorioso ante el venezolano Nehomar Cermeño (19-1,11KO). Sin embargo, los que han visto entrenar al venezolano advierten de las condiciones de éste para el sábado e insisten en que puede poner punto final a la batalla antes del límite de los 12 rounds.

"Voy a reivindicarme con el pueblo panameño con una victoria, que lograré por cualquiera de las dos vías (nocaut o puntos)", ha sido el discurso pronunciado por Moreno todos estos días previos al duelo, que ha sido llamado como La Revancha de la Moreno vs Cermeño realizada en marzo, en La Guaira.

Mientras que Cermeño ha reiterado “nunca me he sentido más confiado. Estamos listos para recuperar esa corona gallo, que se nos arrebató hace unos meses, y lo haré aquí mismo en Panamá”.

Hay gran expectativa en la afición por ver lo que sucederá este sábado en la Arena Roberto Durán, especialmente porque el local asegura estar mejor preparado para este combate que para la pega anterior.

Los peleadores se volverán a ver en el pesaje de este viernes en la tarde en lo que será su último encuentro antes de la hora decisiva.

La pelea será la estelar de la cartelera conformada por un total de 17 combates, que darán inicio a las 4:00 pm panameña (4:30 pm de Venezuela). Se estima que la Moreno vs Cermeño II sea a las 11:00 pm (11:30 pm de Venezuela).

Moreno-Cermeño se reportan listos

Este martes por la tarde se realizó la última conferencia de prensa en el Casino Crown del Hipódromo de Juan Díaz, en la Ciudad de Panamá, de la velada “Moreno-Cermeño II”, en donde los contendores, Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno (29-1-1, 10 KOs) y Nehomar Cermeño (19-1, 11 KOs), quienes disputarán el cetro Gallo   de la AMB, el sábado 14 de agosto en la Arena Roberto Duran, de la Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá.  Con la presencia del promotor panameño Rogelio Espiño (Promociones y Eventos del Istmo) y ante la conducción del experimentado periodista Félix Piñango, la conferencia ofreció los últimos detalles del duelo estelar y el resto de los protagonistas. Ambos, Moreno y Cermeño, están buscando ganar el combate y esperan dar una presentación que los catapulte a ese derecho.

Anselmo Moreno (29-1-1, 10 KOs), quien cuenta con un fino y rápido boxeo, llegara a la reyerta después de haber ganado a Cermeño en el primer combate realizado en el Estado de Vargas, en Venezuela el pasado 27 de marzo, en un pleito muy discutido por la decisión final de los jueces. “Voy a reivindicarme con el pueblo panameño por cualquiera de las dos vías. No tengo dudas de que realizare una buena presentación,” dijo Moreno. “Saldré con la mano en alto”.

Mientras que el venezolano Nehomar Cermeño (19-1, 11 KOs), trae una buena preparación para recuperar su corona.  “He estado entrenando muy fuerte para ganar este combate. Reconozco que mi rival, sabe boxear y tiene técnica,” dijo Cermeño. “Estoy decidido a ganar y subiré   a buscar la victoria desde el primer asalto.”

En duelo principal de respaldo peso mediano, el colombiano Milton Núñez (21-1-1, 19 KOs), enfrentara al púgil de Kazajstán Gennady Golovkin (18-0, 15 KOs), en disputa del cinturón mediano interino de la AMB. Mientras que, el Campeón Interino Mosca de la AMB Luis “El Nica” Concepción (20-1, 15KOs), enfrentara al colombiano Wilfrido Valdez (25-6-3, 18 KOs), ambos oponentes fueron   cordiales y prometieron un choque lleno de emociones. En otro duelo explosivo, el clasificado mundial # 4 superligero de la AMB y Campeón Superligero Fedelatin de la AMB, Alberto Mosquera (13-0, 10KOs), defenderá su posición ante el nicaragüense Nelson Lara (15-2-3, 8 KOs).
