One of the highest quality domestic matches in recent years ended in disappointment for all concerned last night at Manchester Velodrome. The fight (billed as being for the WBA interim world super-bantamweight title) between Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe was halted at 43 seconds of round three due to an horrific cut along the full length of Munroe’s right eyebrow.
A result of an accidental head clash, there was absolutely no doubt that the fight had to end with such a nasty injury. Munroe received nine stitches promptly after the fight, although a lengthy absence will still be required before the two fighters can contemplate facing each other to settle matters properly.
The fight was nicely poised as former European champion Munroe (8st 9lb 10oz) came out confidently in round one, backing Quigg up and mixing his attacks with body shots and uppercuts. Scott though fired a reminder at the end of the round with a straight right that found the target. Munroe (8st 9lb 10oz) continued his front-foot tactics in the second with Quigg (8st 9lb 12 oz) now getting into somewhat of a rhythm himself, landing solid straight punches against the southpaw Munroe.
It was a bright start from both fighters, and only backed up the feeling beforehand that it was a 50/50 fight. Heads came together in round three and Rendall immediately felt the impact, blinking in distress as the blood poured out. The unfortunate anti-climax left the noisy crowd deflated as referee Howard Foster went through the formality of consulting the ringside doctor, but was left with no choice. Without the necessary four rounds having been completed, the result was a Technical Draw.

Anoche, en el Velodromo de Manchester, uno de los combates más esperados de los últimos tiempos en el boxeo local, fue la gran decepción para todos. La pelea, anunciada como titulo súper gallo interino de la AMB, entre Scott Quigg y Rendall Munroe fue parada al Segundo 43 del tercer as alto debido a una horrible cortadura de canto a canto en la ceja derecha de Munroe.
Un resultado por cabezazo accidental, no había duda que la pelea terminaría con una herida tan horrible. Munroe recibió nueve puntos de sutura después del combate, lo que lo mantendrá alejado del ensogado antes que puedan volver a pensar en enfrentarse para resolver diferencias.
Todo estaba bien preparado y el campeón de Europa, Munroe salió muy confiado en el primer as alto, respaldando a Quigg y mezclando su ataque con golpes al cuerpo y upper cuts. Scott lanzó un fuerte disparo al final del asalto y llegó a su objetivo. Munroe mantuvo su táctica en el Segundo entrando en el ritmo lanzando solidos golpes al zurdo Munroe.
Fue un gran comienzo para ambos peleadores, se podía decir que la pelea estaba 50/50. Las cabezas chocaron en el round 3 y Rendall sintió el impacto de inmediato, pestañeando incomodo a medida que la sangre comenzaba a fluir. El lamentable incidente dejo a una multitud muy exaltada con ganas de ver más acción, ya que el referee Howard Foster consulto con el Medico de guardia y este no dejo alternativa. El resultado fue empate técnico ya que no habían transcurrido cuatro asaltos completos.
