This morning, the Venezuela Olympic Committee celebrated in Caracas the Francisco “Morochito” Rodriguez Award, to the best Venezuelan boxing figures.

The specialists awarded the Boxer of the Year to the World Boxing Association Featherweight women champion Ogleidis “La Niña” Suarez, who is also the first woman to receive that recognition in her country.

The WBA President Gilberto Mendoza was awarded the Gold Medal as the Personality of the Year.

The Francisco “Morochito” Rodríguez award to the best boxing figures in Venezuela, is given by the Sports Idols Foundation, and is chosen by the boxing press.

In the ceremony held in Caracas were present and received special recognition the Super Bantamweight Interim champion Alys “La China” Sánchez and the super flyweight interim Liborio Solis, both from Aragua and residents of Panama; “La Niña” Suarez also resides in Panama.

Another woman, Karla Magliocco, received amateur boxing award, for participating in London Olympic Games 2012. That bout was the first women fight the Olympic Games.

Prior to the awards ceremony there was a minute of silence in memory to the different personalities friends of boxing who have passed away, the promoter John Rufo, the manager coach Carlos Piñango, the judge Jesús Celis and President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez.

During the homage, Rufo John’s daughter, Kathy, received the Promoter of the Year award on behalf of his father.

Gilberto Mendoza y Ogleidis Suárez reciben reconocimiento en Venezuela

Durante la mañana de este jueves se realizó en el Comité Olímpico Venezolano, en Caracas, la entrega del Premio Francisco “Morochito” Rodríguez que reconoce a los mejores del mundo boxístico en Venezuela.

Para los especialistas, el galardón de Púgil del Año fue sin discusión para la campeona interina pluma de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, la aragüeña Ogleidis“La Niña” Suárez, quien pasa además a ser la primera dama en apuntarse tal reconocimiento en su país.

Por su parte, el presidente de la AMB, el ingeniero Gilberto Mendoza recibió la Medalla de Oro como Personalidad del Año.

El Premio Francisco “Morochito” Rodríguez, a lo mejor del boxeo en Venezuela, es entregado por la Fundación Ídolos Deportivos, y es escogido por un pool de periodistas especializados en pugilismo.

En el acto realizado en Caracas, también estuvieron presentes y recibieron un reconocimiento especial la campeona mundial interina súper gallo, Alys “La China” Sánchez y el campeón interino súper mosca de la AMB, Liborio Solís, ambos aragüeños y radicados en Panamá, al igual que “La Niña” Suárez.

En el renglón aficionado otra mujer hizo historia, debido a que el premio fue para la olímpica Karla Magliocco, primera fémina venezolana en participar en una pelea en los Juegos Olímpicos en Londres 2012. Igualmente ese primer combate se convirtió en el encargado de inaugurar la incursión de las mujeres en el boxeo dentro del olimpismo.

Previo a la entrega de premios se hizo un minuto de silencio en memoria a las diferentes personalidades fallecidas que siempre fueron aliados al boxeo, el empresario Rufo John, el juez Jesús Celis, el entrenador Carlos Piñango, además del presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez.

Durante el homenaje a John y le entregaron la placa a su hija Kathy, como Promotor del año.
