'Axeman' To Get Keys To The City

Western Bureau:Newly minted World Boxing Association (WBA) Featherweight boxing champion Nicholas 'Axeman' Walters is in line to receive the keys to the city of Montego Bay, following his historic win over Colombian Daulis Prescott on Saturday night in Kingston.

Walters knocked out Prescott 35 seconds into the seventh round after twice flooring him in earlier rounds to become the first Jamaican to win a world-boxing title on home soil.

"There are discussions on the matter involving Prime Minister Simpson Miller, myself and Mr Kellier about giving him the keys to the city after his outstanding and historic achievement," Montego Bay Mayor Glendon Harris told The Gleaner.

The mayor said he became teary eyed after watching the 'Axeman' on television.

"At a convenient time, we will have a function to honour this distinguished son of the city of Montego Bay," Harris said.

Derrick Kellier, the member of parliament for South St James from which Axeman hails, has been one of the strongest supporters of Walters since his early days in the sport, and was the first to buy him a pair of boxing gloves when he was only eight years old.

The association between them developed over subsequent years with the level of involvement doubling from Kellier, who is a known supporter of the sport of boxing in his constituency in which Lawson, Roehampton, Walters' hometown, is located.

"I am very elated with his most magnificent achievement and will pledge more support in this area for boxing, as he has shown us that with hard work and dedication, much can be attained," said Kellier.

The MP has promised assistance for the improvement of a boxing gym which is located in Roehampton.

10th J'can world champion

Twenty-six-year-old Walters outpunched and, in the end, outclassed his Colombian opponent to become the 10th Jamaican world champion, following in the footsteps of heavyweight Trevor Berbick, Michael 'Body Snatcher' McCallum, Simon Brown, Lloyd Honeyghan, Glen Johnson, Uriah Grant, Otis Grant, Oniel Bell, and more recently, female boxing sensation and WBC Super Bantamweight champion Alicia Ashley.

For Mayor Harris, giving Walters the keys to the city is, therefore, a no-brainer.

"It goes without saying, he will be accorded the keys to the city and details of this will be made public soon," Harris said.
