The American Austin Trout remains as the World Boxing Association super welterweight champion after defeating Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision, in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The judges’ score were 117-111, 117-111, and 119-109.
Before an audience of more than 13,000 fans, Trout and Cotto engaged in a closed match where the champion took advantage of his reach to keep Puerto Rican away.
Trout kept Cotto at the bay, but Cotto at times showed his experience and complicated Trout. However, the still champion avoided him frustrating the four-time champions’ intention.
After the fight was over, Trout thanked the audience for attending and said his added that his victory was first thanks to God. “After the battle, Trout thanked the public for assistance, and also said that his victory was due first of all to God. "To my family, to all the team, without them this victory would not have been possible", said promptly.
He also stated that he "felt some blows from Cotto, but that he was not injured. I am happy with this victory; I am satisfied with what we did. I am also grateful to Cotto who is a great opponent and a great Boxer who gave me the opportunity of this great battle".
At the press conference, Trout said that he was willing to give Cotto a rematch when he wants it.
“Is my desire to be the best, I want to fight with the best, and for that I must fight with the best. That is the way I think, perhaps others don't agree but I want to be the best,” ended.
Meanwhile, Cotto was much more reticent in his statements at the press conference. "I'm fine, tired but well", and later stated that he will take a few days to rest, "tomorrow will travel to Puerto Rico with my family, and I will rest during Christmas, I will take those days to think".
However, he stated that it is not the time to retire, "I will continue, there is still much to be done and I'm sure about that. I will continue".
He admitted it was not his best night, and admitted having fought with a great fighter. "I learned a lot from him tonight", he concluded before leaving from the room.

El estadounidense Austin Trout sigue siendo campeón del peso súper welter de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo después de vencer por decisión unánime al puertorriqueño Miguel Cotto, en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York.
Las tarjetas de los jueces fueron 117-111, 117-111, 119-109.
Ante una asistencia de más de 13 mil aficionados que colmaron el lugar, Trout y Cotto se enfrascaron en una cerrada lucha donde el campeón sacó ventaja de su alcance para mantener a distancia al boricua.
Mantuvo a raya a Cotto, quien por momentos mostraba su experiencia y complicaba a Trout. Sin embargo, el todavía monarca lo esquivaba y frustraba las intenciones del cuatro veces campeón.
Después de terminar el combate, Trout agradeció al público por la asistencia, y también dijo que su victoria se debía primeramente a Dios. “A mi familia, a todo el equipo de trabajo, sin ellos este triunfo no hubiera sido posible”, dijo puntualmente.
Comentó también que pudo “sentir los algunos golpes de Cotto, pero que no se fue maltratado. Estoy feliz por esta victoria, estoy satisfecho con lo que hicimos. También agradecido con Cotto que es un gran rival, un gran boxeador y me dio la oportunidad de esta gran batalla”.
En la rueda de prensa Trout comentó también que está dispuesto a darle la revancha a Cotto, cuando la desee.
“Es mi deseo ser el mejor, quiero pelear con los mejores, y para eso debo pelear con los mejores. Es mi manera de pensar, tal vez otros no piensen así pero yo quiero ser el mejor”, finalizó.
Por su parte, Cotto fue mucho más parco en sus declaraciones en la rueda de prensa. “Estoy bien, cansado pero bien”, y después comentó que se tomará unos días para descansar, “mañana mismo me voy a Puerto Rico con mi familia, y voy a descansar los días de Navidad, tomaré esos días para pensar”.
Sin embargo, recalcó que no es el momento de retirarse, “seguiré, todavía hay mucho por hacer y estoy seguro de eso. Voy a seguir”.
Admitió que no fue su mejor noche, y reconoce haber peleado con un gran peleador. “Aprendí mucho de él esta noche”, finalizó antes de retirarse del lugar.
